Les Miserables is a 2000 French television miniseries based on the 1862 novel of the same name by Victor Hugo. It was broadcast in four ninety-minute parts. This adaptation is widely considered to be the most faithful to the novel, maintaining the setting and time period while covering the full arc of the story. The original French language broadcast was critically acclaimed and is considered one of the best television adaptations, especially in its home country of France. However, the truncated three-hour English version was derided for bad acting and is considered very poor. The producers opted to co-film entire scenes in English, instead of using dubbing. The largely French ensemble struggled to deliver solid performances in English.
The miniseries stars Gérard Depardieu as Jean Valjean, a former convict who tries to redeem himself after being shown mercy by a bishop. He adopts a young girl named Cosette, who is the daughter of Fantine, a factory worker who died in poverty. Valjean is pursued by John Malkovich as Javert, a relentless police inspector who believes that Valjean can never change his criminal nature. The story also features Jeanne Moreau as Mère Innocente, the abbess of the convent where Valjean and Cosette take refuge; Charlotte Gainsbourg as Fantine, Cosette's mother who sells her hair, teeth and body to provide for her child; Virginie Ledoyen as Cosette, Valjean's adopted daughter who falls in love with a young revolutionary named Marius; Enrico Lo Verso as Marius, a student who joins a group of rebels who plan to overthrow the monarchy; Asia Argento as Éponine, the daughter of the Thénardiers, a pair of crooked innkeepers who mistreat Cosette; and Veronica Ferres as Madame Thénardier, Éponine's mother and Cosette's former caretaker.
